A shared responsibility in electric mobility

Cybersecurity is becoming part of everyday work in electric mobility. As vehicles become more connected and software-driven, protecting systems, data and people is increasingly important. At Emoss, cybersecurity is not seen as a one-time project, but as a way of working.

We spoke with Ludwig Nolasco, Lead Engineer at Emoss, about what cybersecurity means in practice. His work connects engineering, functional safety, cybersecurity and process development. This gives him a broad view: from vehicle architecture and systems to daily routines and company culture.


Cybersecurity in automotive starts with awareness

According to Ludwig, cybersecurity has two sides. One side is technical: protecting software, systems, vehicles and data. The other side is cultural: how people work, how aware they are of risks and how they handle information in daily situations.

“For me, cybersecurity is partly about what we develop and how we protect our systems,” Ludwig explains. “And a very large part is cybersecurity culture. It is about people and awareness.”

That is why Emoss publishes an internal cybersecurity newsletter and organizes in-house workshops to raise cybersecurity awareness. The goal is to keep the topic alive, make it understandable and help everyone recognise risks earlier. Cybersecurity is not only relevant for engineers or IT. It involves the whole company.

Why cybersecurity matters for electric vehicles

Modern electric vehicles contain software, electronic control units, remote connections and data flows. These systems help fleet owners monitor performance, plan maintenance and improve uptime. At the same time, every connection needs attention from a cybersecurity point of view.


Three areas of cybersecurity risk

Ludwig describes cybersecurity risks in three broad areas: workplace, people and products.

In the workplace, sensitive information can be visible on a desk, screen or printed document. A clean desk, a locked computer and careful handling of information may sound small, but they are important habits.

People are another important layer. A wrong click, shared access or unsecured device can have a big impact.

The third area is the product itself. Emoss develops and integrates systems for electric vehicles, including connected components and remote monitoring. That means the vehicle architecture needs to detect unusual behaviour and respond in time.


Security without losing practicality

Cybersecurity often comes with change. New routines, new rules and sometimes less convenience. That can create resistance. Ludwig recognises this clearly.

“The biggest challenge is often not the system,” he says. “It is resistance to change.”

A good example is the use of personal and company devices. One phone may feel easier, but it can also mix private and business data. If such a device is lost or misused, the risk becomes real. The challenge is to find a workable balance: enough protection, without taking away flexibility, creativity and trust.

Cybersecurity in Emoss Connect and vehicle architecture

For our customers, connected vehicle data is valuable. With Emoss Connect, fleet owners can monitor vehicles remotely and gain insight into performance and status. This remote connection also means cybersecurity must be part of the system design.

Emoss works with partners and suppliers in this area but remains responsible for the architecture and implementation of its own systems. That means looking closely at how components communicate, how signals are monitored and how unusual behaviour can be detected.


Preparing for regulations and standards

Cybersecurity in automotive is increasingly linked to regulations, audits and customer expectations. Emoss is actively working towards relevant requirements such as UN Regulation No. 155, UN Regulation No. 156, ISO/SAE 21434 and ISO 27001.

These frameworks help structure the work around risk, software updates, company processes and technical security measures. For Emoss, preparation has been underway for some time, including policies, facilities, IT topics and process changes.


A team effort across Emoss

Cybersecurity at Emoss is not the work of one person. Ludwig emphasises that progress is only possible through teamwork. Supply Chain, Engineering, IT, HR, management and other departments all play a role.

Internal communication is also important. Regular updates, practical examples and clear explanations help people understand why changes are needed. This makes cybersecurity less abstract and more connected to daily work.


Building trust through responsible electrification

For Emoss, cybersecurity is part of building reliable electric mobility solutions. Customers need vehicles and systems they can trust. That trust is built through engineering, clear processes, awareness and continuous improvement.

 

As Ludwig puts it, cybersecurity is a journey. It takes effort, patience and collaboration. But it is also an important part of responsible innovation in electric mobility.
